A coworker put this on during some downtime. So had to watch the dub version unfortunately. Some people are really into the Godzilla fandom and I never was. I'm not into Mecha anime either. So for an outsider, I can say I was happily surprised. I think it's because a big b plot of the movie focuses on the inefficiencies of Japanese bureaucracy. I thought it was a commentary on their constitution that prevents them from having military outside their backyard because of the looming threat of China. And then thought maybe the slow response to COVID. But when I saw the release date it was clear that it was about the response to Fukushima. (Wikipedia confirmed this.) So yeah, it's not just some mindless action where every person looks like an ant. (Like most Michael Bay movies.) Instead, there is enough humanity to make you care about them surviving and solving the crisis. The way Godzilla was depicted, the way he evolves , and his Venom like teeth / laser attacks make the action very entertaining even on their modest Japanese budget. Watch it if you want a palate cleanser from your typical taste in movies.
