Pretty good
As for the dark comedy aspects, it's exactly what you'd expect from Tim Burton. You never laugh out loud, but are entertained and enjoy the tragic interconnectedness and call backs. No spoilers, but the pay off at the end was VERY satisfying albeit bittersweet after 2 hours of revenge porn edging. No songs are memorable like the "This is Halloween, This is Halloween" catchy tunes. But I did find myself hearing random snippets from the soundtrack in my head the following day. I don't know the terminology but it's one of the musicals where they kind of talk sing. Likewise, there's a lot of dissonant melodies that seem to change pace and direction mid song. I'm a big fan of when they have two separate songs that are sung simultaneously (guess that's called polyphony) and Sweeney Todd has tons of those. All executed really well. Overall, worth watching once every 5 or 10 years. Maybe something for Halloween or when you want a Horror flick that's not cliché.
If you like musicals it was good. Guess I'm fruity enough to enjoy musicals but not gay enough to be a snob about them. I remember enjoying the live action version of "Les Miserables" because I had no frame of reference. It's the only version I saw so I liked it. To me, saying "the broadway play was better" is like saying "the book was better." Yeah, no sh*t. When isn't the book better? I think "Fight Club" was the one exception to that, and even that is debatable.
Anyways, this is not one of the greats in terms of musicals but it was enjoyable for sure. All White cast and since the iteration it was based on was written in '79, there are no feminist undertones. Quite the opposite, there's even a romance song where a kid talks about stealing a woman.
