Saved in post or just a good watch?
This is one of those movies whose sum is more than its parts. Many hack critics will focus on an actor's performance and harp on about that while forgetting that it's not enough to have just acting, you gotta have a f**king story. I think Witherspoon took home some award for her performance in this, for example, but I don't give a sh*t.
More than any actor's performance, you gotta have ambience to really make a movie work. And this one has that. Some people will say it was the editing that saved this movie, and the editing is truly masterclass, but I don't think it was purely editing either.
There is a certain hostile dynamic throughout the film that's particular to black comedies and it's hard to explain here, but what I can say is that a lot of movies tend to f**k it up and go overboard in one direction, making the whole thing a miserable watch. But the few pictures that get it right are legendary. American Beauty is probably the prime example.
Now, Election doesn't quite have American Beauty's level of impact, or something like Rushmore's wholesomeness, but it does put you in a similar kind of world, one that is interesting and makes you want to be there.
Anyway, you might want to Pick this Flick.
