Just rewatched it recently and it still holds up. I was gonna' say Scorsese doesn't disappoint but I googled his filmography and realized I haven't seen most. And there were a lot of titles that bombed or were hated by our milieu. Idk, I really liked "Silence" and this one as well. Unlike "The Big Short" it doesn't try to preach anti Capitalist stuff. And even skips over the technical jargon. The ending scene is supposed to be a mirror to the audience kinda' showing that "there's no such thing as an anti war war movie" and apparently no such thing as an anti criminal criminal movie. Because despite everything, we want to live like him. We're as bad as rappers who glorify Scarface. There were a few other scenes and exchanges that hint at how messed up American economics and government are. But they are all accurate criticisms and only implied. It's really just a character study and it humanizes him. That's why I want to say I like Scorsese. Because "Silence" was the same. You're not sure who to root for, the Japanese or the Portuguese. And there's no clear conclusion just exploring historical events and different archetypes. Although, in this one, the FBI agent is a dick head and you are rooting for DiCaprio despite him being a horrible person. I donno, I enjoyed it and it has replay value once every 5 year or so. Also Jonah did great in this. Feel bad for him lol:
