On April 14th, Jeff Bezos launched Blue Origin, an event described by some as “rich ladies going to space for 10 minutes.” While the media were told to turn this into a feminist, “empowering” event for all women, the symbolism surrounding it pointed in a different direction.
Presented as a momentous event “for all womenkind”, the Blue Origin crew included pop star Katy Perry, journalist Gayle King, and, why not, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez.
Whether on purpose or not, this feminist event took place in a very phallic-looking rocket. The mission patch was also loaded with perplexing symbolism. For instance, what is the thing in the middle? It doesn’t look like the ship, so what is it?
