The Farewell, 2019 - ★★★★Full review >>
I’d avoided it for reasons that make no sense. But it’s really good! Like an actually emotionally affecting version of CRAZY RICH ASIANS: a movie that asks deep and penetrating questions about family, dislocation, and globalization’s inherently atomizing nature.
Awkwafina, who I generally do not care for, is amazing here. Lulu Wang’s direction is pitch perfect, framing the family and its individual elements with skill. Like, the sequence with the drinking game at the wedding? Just perfect visual comedy.
