This historical drama from writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball) and writer Dana Stevens (Fatherhood), from a story by Stevens and Maria Bello (The Water Man), focuses on General Nanisca (Viola Davis - Widows), leader of the elite all-female warriors of the Kingdom of Dahomey, dubbed the Dahomey Amazons. The legendary fighters prepare for battles to retain the kingdom's power and preserve a way of life. In the mid-nineteenth century, Dahomey was one of the strongest military powers in Africa, enriched, sadly, by the Kingdom’s practice of capturing and selling slaves to European traders.
