Very good, needs depth
Don't take me wrong, this is a fascinating look into the life one one of last centuries most interesting figures and it certainly isn't watered down that much, but I was hoping we could have gotten a little bit more context and depth in this otherwise terrific documentary.
I honestly have the feeling we are getting more of a personal glimpse and not an explanation of what is the meaning behind Junger's worldview and how it developed. But perhaps that wasn't exactly the intention behind this documentary: show the life of one of histories most interesting characters and the steps he took to make him the man he was on that particular date.
Am I personally very familiar with his books? Well, I once bought his "Worker" in a bookshop, but I found it far to dense, I got the impression of a highly intelligent and erudite man and perhaps if I was younger and a little smarter I would take the time to study his work, but alas I am not.
Another aspect of this documentary I really liked is it's rawness about the nature of war, but that is not uncommon when you interview veterans, also what I found highly fascinating is how he was able to survive the war by virtue of his war-novel, had he not published it, he would most likely be some minor and unknown figure in the history books.
Recommended, it's on youtube, just click on the trailer to get there.
