A film I wanted to check out a while, primarily because its a bizarre and over the top representation of the kind of loony intellectuals that still trouble our society, La Chinoise is a communist film, both an honest attempt at depicting the weird Anarchist-Maoist ideology common in this period and a satire of typical intellectual types, who only talk and discuss, but dont build. Basically the film is a montage of a bunch of confused college students, constantly using mostly meaning abstract flowery language, aimlessly discussing the revolution, the workers revolt, Vietnam and generic communist garbage, we get the occasional skit in between the arguments, all in all its somewhat enjoying watching the nuthouse. The satire is naturally depicted as the farmer's girl cleaning shoes, doing the windows and working as a prostitute while the middle class members of the commune just talk, one of the girls becomes a terrorist, her college proffesor gets her corned, she doesnt know what to do next or what the purpose of terrorism would be. Eventually we see the members of the commune erasing more and more names from a blackboard, there is no place for poets and wrongthink in a totalitarian state. Though Godard became a communist in this period, this film ironically works to highlight the insanity of communist ideology and intellectuals in general, the film did not age well, any 21th century person not already influenced by a dying ideology would admit these people are nuts. Outside of its value to expose the sickness of intellectualism and radical political ideology, its not a really good film, its power is mostly satirical, I certainly didnt enjoy it that much, at the end of the film you pity the young people who throw away their lives for clouds and shadows.
