My first attempt to really watch this anthology show, not completely finished yet, but I get a really clear picture what makes this show so popular in the public imagination. There are in my opinion 4 elements that make this show stand out. First there is often times high quality of storytelling found in many of the episodes, this may change from episode to episode, some are little masterpieces on their own, while other episodes are a bore. But overall, the acting is good, the character are four dimensional, which adds flavour to a type of genre that usually lacks it. There is a breadth of subject matter, most of the episodes work on a kind of ironic twist, usually with moral overtones, the show occasionally jumps into scifi, or horror, but in all honesty suspense would be a better description, it's not really a fantastical show, how strange as it may sound, but more one that deals with human nature by use of the strange and paranormal. For example, some story types you will rarely find anymore in more modern productions, there are dozens of episodes with a strong rural and southern twist and it's refreshing to see this type of story played straight and humanized, unlike most modern tv-shows. It's very much a benchmark show, for a whole boatload of of different genre's and films produced in the 70 years following the show, you can watch almost any episode of this series and see some of it's elements popping up in everything from modern horror, to a paranormal detective series. The last element I like is that the show is overall fairly moral and decent, like I wrote earlier, it's basically a collection of many different paranormal suspense stories, usually with some kind of ironic twist. The show deals very well with questions of faith, good and evil, human choice etc. Where the show does throw a shadow is the progressive agenda you will occasionally find in some of the episodes, not that's it's very multicultural, even for the period, or that it's lewd, no it's just the occasional kumbaya or racism bad. It's a show produced on the very cusp of the "sexual revolution", so it's still intimately watchable.
