The Misfits, 1961 - ★★★★

Something of a wonder to see Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable in their final film, which was penned by Arthur Miller and directed by John Huston. Eli Wallach and Montgomery Clift are also great in this.

It's kind of a hangout film that turns sad and depressing as the characters' ideals melt away, with only the harsh reality of life left standing. There's a lot to this film - the decline of marriage, the rise of divorce, the death of the West, the rise of industrialism, the price of freedom, and the lingering trauma from WWII.

Saw this at a free screening at AFS as part of a series examining the cinematic influences of Asteroid City.
