Big fan of the series. It was well done but the manic pixie dream Black girl took me out of the film. Not just 'cuz she's Black but because she was out of place. And because she kicked some White jock in the nuts and there was an entire side plot about dumb frat guys. Idk, maybe I'm biased because of how often they shove "diversity" into everything so I am primed to not like them even if they are a good actor. But I don't think so. I think when you have quotas they are gonna' be objectively sh*ttier actors and I just notice it. They also had a satirical jab at the current manosphere / Andrew Tate type of guy (a.k.a. Frat guys) when one said "This is the last place where men can be MEN!" Then cut to POC cringing and scoffing at him. He was the comedic relief, but the bias was obvious and unnecessary. Nowadays everything has to be ruined. So even though it was only a 30 min long side plot, and you can still enjoy the rest of the film, send Hollywood a message and don't pay for this one. As for the rest of the film, good sh*t. My gf pointed out the clichรฉ moody teen trope and grief analogy that's in every horror film. But it was fitting within the context of the series imo and was not the main point like "Boogey Man" "Babadook" and "Smile." Hell, it added to the realism because as the wife said, "You chased our kids around the house with a hammer!" lol And I stand by my take that I expressed with "No Hard Feelings." A big reason forced diversity and wokeness kills the moviegoing experience is because they are deathly afraid to portray any stereotypes. So, yeah, there is overlap with clichรฉs and stereotypes, but the moody teen is a clichรฉ for a reason. Everyone can relate. I loved how they showed the awkwardness of a divorced dad trying to reconnect and text with his grown son. It's weird for us as men to show love since any vulnerability is seen as gay. Plus the modern individualist society plagued by smart phone introversion and divorce, very relatable. I'm really glad they included that side plot weaved throughout. Likewise, the way they filmed the texting was unlike any film I've seen. Nowadays they all show the SMS pop up on screen. But this one really lingered in real time. Showing the currently typing dots. The hesitation of how you word your texts. Good stuff. The same goes for the horror in this. I was really impressed with how long they let the tension linger and how many fakeouts there were. This was not a clichรฉ horror film in that regard. They even utilized a lot of day time scenes without relying too heavily on shaky cameras and dark lighting. Instead they used out of focus blurry people in the background creeping up. Reminded me of a perfect execution of the Alfred Hitchock bomb under the table technique:
