Missed it in theaters but put it on before bed to see what the hoopla was about. I'm sure Nintendo wouldn't let them shove any propaganda into it or race swap Luigi. However, it's unthinkable to make the plot about saving a damsel in distress. So they made Peach a girlboss and really overdid it for "comedic effect."

Since it's targeted to children and there were no kids in the room, I just turned it off about 30 minutes in. Especially because I had seen the Jack Black singing as Bowser clips on Twitter. Not much to look forward to and Peach belittling Mario in every line was annoying. Also, they modernized it and localized it so it was very American and 2023. I couldn't shake that cookie cutter Pixar-esque goyslop vibe, meaning the nostalgia got overridden.

So although it wasn't bad I just couldn't be bothered to finish it. Maybe I'll get around to it next time I babysit...

I wonder what a Japanese film adaptation of Mario would look like. 🤔
