I feel like I need to give me my 2 cents on this film, I will hit right home, Starship Troopers is many things, it is, for all intents and purposes not a "satire" or for that matter a "satire on fascism", I will break down why I think so. First, a satire need to be so, clearly and unequivocally, it's needs to be seen as a satire by both the people you are trying to satirize, as well as the in-crowd, when a film fails to deliver this, whatever the intentions of the people writing and directing a film might be, it is not a satire, it's just pandering to the in-group. For example, someone who thinks the model-cast of this film is an indication of "satire", thinks to much in an in vs. out-group. The out-group is ridiculous, because they do this and we do that, they are beautiful, we are ugly, so it's clearly a satire on fascism, etc. That this is not something, a large minority of people would think or see, is something they do not understand. Secondly, the film does not satirize any real government, now or in the past, the military government lifted from the book, does not resemble any fascist, communist or national-socialist government in recent history. Mixed troops, both gender and race, a separation between citizens vs. civilians and laissez-faire economics are not fascist (or communist) hall-marks. They are elements crudely cobbled together from Heinlein's original, jingoist-libertarian principles. In other words, the film should be watched as pure scifi, a future government and society, one that does not directly resemble our own past, has developed and has it's own intrinsic values, these may resemble Hitler's Germany, Napoleon's France or modern woke ideology, but it is not a wink to the past. Why then the idea that this is a satire, well two reasons, first it makes a lot of people uncomfortable, so it's a satire.... secondly is something more intrinsic to how the film operates, the film and it's many short infomercials are made in the style of a propaganda piece... but... propaganda is not satire, propaganda is selecting the best and/or the worst and putting them in juxtaposition to every day life, in order to further a point. What is this point? Most likely either that we all need communal showers, or that the highest achievements of humanity, can not be separated from it's dark underbelly. A vibrant, healthy society, will eventually find enemies to fight, because it's vibrant and healthy and wishes to stay that way. As a propaganda piece, yes this the film does wonderfully, really, we see both the best man has to offer, next to the horrors of war and combat and when we combine these two points, it's essentially a propaganda film about a unique future government with it's own rules and etiquette, you do not need to look further then that, or you will end up reading a subtext into this film that isn't there.
