The Sweet East, 2023 - ★★½

It's a mixed bag. The cinematography was obviously good, but the characters, plot, and pacing left a lot to be desired. It feels like a satire of modernity with very little bite and its idea of being edgy is the frequent use of the word r*tarded. It culminates in a shallow albeit semi-enjoyable experience.

Much like the film-within-the-film, The Sweet East takes the approach of throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. Some of what it throws is quite good, like the film set scene and some of it is lackluster and mediocre.

I think the standout performance of this movie is Simon Rex, who plays as a verbose white supremacist professor. There aren't any outright bad performances. All the actors are clearly having fun with their roles. It's just that the film doesn't come together...
