90's USA Thru Jap Eyes

More mental junk food, but the best kind there is. I think the intro clearly inspired Cowboy Bebop. Check it out:

It's very charming to see America through the lens of Japanese people who admire us. Everyone is a gun nut who kicks ass and takes names. And the sheltered Japanese creators being completely unaware of race is very apparent too. The two main characters look like any other anime girl but one has blonde hair & blue eyes, whereas the other has mocha skin. It's like they truly believe race is only skin deep. To be fair though, there are a few background characters that are Black, with frizzy hair and big lips. So they are aware of racial differences somewhat, and I guess Rally is half Indian according to the manga. Which makes sense. ( Fun fact, it turns out the main character is named Larry, but pronounced "Rally" because it got lost in translation. They didn't know that's a really gruff man's name & they famously mix up R's and L's. )

Anyways, I remember seeing a review of the Top Gun reboot on that Japanese review site, Eiga. And they said it reminded them of the "old America that inspired you." That was hard to read but it's true. And I wonder how much of that "old America" ever existed or if it was just the product of Hollywood propaganda making us look cool and sugar coating racial differences with buddy cop movies. Or maybe the reason everyone romanticizes 80's/90's stuff is because that was the peak of the perks that came from neoliberalism before the dystopian aspects of multiculturalism/globalism really took effect. (I've been watching Russian & German shows and they also have this 80's/90's obsession as well.)

Hard to say. But whatever, it's comforting to watch a buddy cop movie with a clichรฉ Russian bad guy and all the other tropes like a corrupt police force & rogue Clint Eastwood type. And having it in Anime form puts a creative spin on it so you can sit through the whole thing without losing patience at the predictability.

Also it's worth noting that the strong female characters that make up the entirety of the 3 episode series are not feminist by any means. They are often put in skimpy outfits & risquรฉ positions because their characters were written by men for men. Yet another reason I watch anime. I don't get butthurt or have to put my defenses up when there's some tiny girl demolishing henchman twice her size with machine guns, grenades, and karate moves. It's just pure entertainment.
