Gone too soon. This limited series, with only seven glorious episodes, is a woman-fronted Western that follows outlaw Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) on his quest to seek revenge against the delightfully villainous Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels), whose favorite activity is apparently just terrorizing anyone and everyone he comes across. While this is all well and good and on track for a typical Western (snore), it’s the spunky, take-no-sh*t widow, Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery), running a ranch in the West with her sensitive son and antagonistic mother-in-law, who adds depth and nuance to the show. Sure, while Roy recovers at her ranch, there might be some sexual tension, but dammit, let’s not lose sight of the real highlight of this series, which is that Alice is a force to be reckoned with.
