In Northern India, the Shark’s Fin cliff atop Mount Meru rises some 21,000 feet above the Ganges. In 2008 world-class climber Jimmy Chin and relative newbie Renan Ozturk, joined their idol and mentor Conrad Anker in an attempted climb. At the time, Mt. Meru had hosted the most failed climbs of any mountain in the Himalayas, without a single success. In this documentary from Jimmy Chin (Free Solo) and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi (Free Solo), a sudden, brutal storm derails their effort and nearly kills the climbers. The trio promises their families they will never attempt the Shark’s Fin again. However, in 2011 they break that promise. In addition to the climb, the doc looks at the psychology of the climbers and the toll that this dangerous pursuit takes on their families.
