Teenage Bri (Jamila C. Gray) dreams of being a great rapper, in part to honor the legacy of her father, a rising rap star who was silenced by gang violence. This rousing musical drama from director Sanaa Lathan (Brown Sugar) and writer Kay Oyegun (This Is Us), based on the novel by Angie Thomas, follows Bri, as she tries to break into battle rap. She has to negotiate family issues, including a prickly relationship with her mother Jada (Lathan), while mustering the competitive hip-hop swagger to succeed in this unforgiving arena.
