Seminal ballet teacher George Balanchine and his audacious New York City Ballet are profiled in this documentary from Connie Hochman. His mad, spiritual, and always painfully rigorous training spawned generations of followers, many of whom are interviewed. Previously unseen footage of the master at work, both in classes and rehearsals and preparations for his major works, gives behind-the-scenes access to Balanchine’s style and method. Devotees remember how hard and often painful his classes were, and that was part of what made them great. Or so they say.
